LG G4 First Impressions #vzwbuzz #AD

Hey kids, for today’s TommyLog Tech, I want to give you some initial impressions of my new LG G4 that my good friends at Verizon provided.. Huge thanks go out to them!

The first thing I love about this phone is the camera. The G4 has a 16MP rear facing camera as well as a 8MP front facing camera. The camera software even has a fully manual mode where you can set the white balance, exposure even ISO. People who like to dink with settings will love that.

Next thing that I noticed is the speed. Geekbench rates this Qualcomm® Snapdragon™ 808 processor, 1.8GHz 64-bit Hexa-Core CPU as one of the fastest Android phones on the market with single-core score of 1142 and multi-core of 3545. Launching and moving from app to app feels almost seamless. The screen takes a lot of horsepower to move that many pixels so it better be fast.

Next topic that stands out is the sound and Holy Cow–  is the sound that comes out of this tiny handset just HUGE. I mean amazing. I have never heard sound like this come out of a smartphone like that. How LG manage to pack a Marshall Stack in a battery operated, pocket-sized handset like this I’ll never know!

Lastly there’s a feature called QRemote. The G4 has a built in IR blaster so I can control my TV, DVR as well as my Apple TV. The thing that caught my eye is when configuring the remote, the G4 got my TV and set top box on the first try. it literally took me seconds from launching the software to controlling my entire entertainment center with the G4. Love that!

The bonus thing that I couldn’t help but notice is the screen. WOW OH WOW– is this screen just drop dead gorgeous! Hello, 5.5 inches of AMOLED goodness! This 2560 x 1440 screen yields 538 PPI and the colors are bright and amazing.

So far the LG G4 is totally 100% Tommy Approved! Stay tuned for more videos as I dive even deeper into using this baby.

STAY TUNED for more G4 goodness– not only did they send me a handset to test and play with, they also gave me one to GIVE AWAY on my blog. HOW COOL IS THAT???!!

Stay tuned to my next TommyLog TECH as I set up and play with the LG G4 and we will see if it’s Tommy Approved!

TommyLog TECH – Dance Dad, DROID Turbo and the 21 MP Camera #VZWbuzz #AD

Dance Dad & ClaraHey kids for today’s TommyLog Tech, I would like to talk to you a little about my life as a dance dad. This is my daughter Clara and me and she is on the Little Chute High School dance squad. November thru February I spend my Saturdays sitting in regional high school gyms and arenas on my backside for hours watching Clara’s competitions. This has given me loads of time to play with my new- DRIOD Turbo by Motorola provided by my good friends at Verizon. One area that I just could not wait to get my hands on was the 21MP camera that Motorola tucked inside the Turbo. I have always said the best camera is the one I have available. I know people with big DSLR rigs and by the time it takes to unzip their camera bag, the moment may have passed and the shot missed. Keep that in mind.

One of my favorite features above all that the Turbo possesses is the “wrist flick” feature to activate the LCHS Dance Teamcamera. A simple flick of the wrist and the camera turns on. Flick it again, and it switched from the forward to rear facing camera. That’s one feature not found in any other smart phone I have tested.

The next feature that I really like is the ability to take HDR photos. What is HDR? HDR stands for High Dynamic Range. I think I said high definition resolution, where did I get that? Not sure but I had a brain lapse on that one. High dynamic range is a mode where it takes 3 pictures at once. One is under exposed, the other is over exposed and the 3rd is properly exposed picture and then stitches them together. The wider dynamic range of HDR pictures can be pretty stunning. Use your google skills and you’ll see what I’m talking about.

The DROID Turbo also has a panorama mode, where you can take some pretty amazing shots. Gone are the Oshkosh Invite panodays where you have to stitch pictures together to get the shot you want. You just click the panorama mode and follow the on-screen cues to take the prefect panorama.

The camera on the Turbo is a 21 megapixel shooter. It’s a bit of a disappointment that the 21MP shots are only taken in 4:3 mode where the 15.5MP shots are taken in 16;9 more…or wide screen mode. I prefer 16:9 pictures over 4.3, but your mileage will very. Turning to video, the DROID Turbo simply rocks. Not only does this camera take 1080P video and slo-motion video at 720P, it also takes video at a whopping 4K. Now be careful, these videos are just HUGE in size, almost a GB per minute of video. YIKES! Another gotcha about 4K video is that you cannot play it back on the Turbo itself. You will need to watch it on a 4K TV or monitor.

The camera on the DRIOD Turbo by Motorola is Tommy approved.  Its ease of use can’t be beat. Not the best camera I have ever used, but certainly takes decent pictures.

TommyLog TECH – Emma’s Take – Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1 – 2014 edition #VZWbuzz #AD

Today for TommyLog TECH I’ve teamed up with my little 7-year-old daughter Emma to play with the Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1 — 2014 edition from Verizon.

The first feature that I set up for Emma was the user account feature. You can set up accounts and restrict access to certain apps, so just the apps Emma wants are on her home screens. NOTE: Not all apps run property with user accounts set up. Apps like Gmail and Google syncing only work on the main “admin” account and not sub user accounts.

One of the built-in apps on the Galaxy Note 10.1 that Emma was just drawn to is the camera app. She takes pictures of everything around the inside and outside for the house including a huge load of selfies. The camera app of the Note 10.1, with built in photo editor abilities to add filters, effects, and draw on the screen with the S Pen, is a huge bonus for Emma and her creative skills

The last aspect of the Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1 Emma loves is the YouTube app. Emma is a HUGE lover of YouTube and searching for new content. One thing that Emma noticed immediately about the YouTube app on the Note 10.1 that differentiated it from the YouTube app on her iPad mini was the search capabilities. When you search, it starts giving you suggestions with each character that you type. This makes finding what she wants- as a new speller- easier and quicker!

Emma says that the Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1 — 2014 edition from Verizon is totally Tommy Approved!

I was actually making a TommyLog while doing the piece. What an honor to be asked…  So Cool and so much fun to work with Erin and her team. THANKS Erin and thank you WFRV!
