TommyLog – Emma Had a Down Day

Emma this week had a down day. In her first grade room they have a traffic light system for tracking behavior. Each day they start on green, ready to learn. If they’re exceptional it goes up to blue. If they’re having a rough day it goes to Orange, and if it gets worse than that it goes to red which means I have to talk to parents.

Emma had an orange day. When Emma saw her kindergarten teacher Mr. Seelig she told Mr. Seelig about her bad day. Mr. Seelig is so sweet and so kind and just knows exactly how to treat Emma and what Emma needs. Mr. Seelig left the best post-it note on Emma’s desk giving her encouragement and wishing her well. We love Mr. Seelig. He is a true educator and loves kids to the core.

Emma have a good day, I LOVE YOU!

TommyLog – Supporting Your Heritage

This is a different Tommylog. I received an email question about language and heritage and i wanted to address it as a video.

Here’s the contents of the letter…

If you spoke another language fluently (in this case, Italian) along with English (you being Bilingual). Would you speak both—openly?
The reason I say ‘openly’ is because *I know* people that are able to speak their native [heritage (more minorities)] language,  and refuse to speak…
Like If they’re ashamed.
I *somewhat* have a feeling why. In the minority category are blacks & Hispanics.
In society, it’s much better now… but it’s always been tough.
Not sure how it was in Rochester while you grew-up…
If there were any Hispanics in your neighborhood, or If you had any as friends/acquaintances.

I appreciate the letter and love the opportunity to talk about this. I feel that being true to yourself and your heritage is important, but with that said, the frame of reference for me is considerably different.

TommyLog – Changing Someone’s Life for the Better!

Received a very powerful message from a life long friend Peter. Peter and I became friends back in grade school at Barker Road Elementary and have shared computer geek passions ever since. Peter shared a experience he had at a fast food restaurant that touched me deeply enough to share it in church on Sunday and with you now.

I feel so blessed to have learned this life lesson and to know… sometimes we need a little perspective.

Tale of 2 Customer Service Experiences

Had 2 very different customer services experiences the other day. One with Kaukauna Clinic where I have my primary care doctor and one at CVS pharmacy where I was to pick up my prescription and a few over the counter meds. Give this a listen to hear about all-star treatment and not so all-star treatment 🙁
