TommyLog – Emma Helps Someone at School

Emma had a really neat experience at summer school yesterday. There was this girl, a few years younger than Emma who was sad to be leaving her mom. Emma reached out to her and made her feel safe. Emma set such a great example.

TommyLog – Tommy’s 5 Safe Driving Tips #FordDriveSafe

Hey kids, for today’s Tommylog I want to talk about safe driving. I have been behind the wheel for almost 30 years -YIKES- and I have logged a lot of miles in the cars I have owned. These days I travel about 35 miles each way to work so I have a little experience in the area of driving safely.

So, lets jump right into some tips:

1.    Use the Right lane.  Most of my daily mileage is highway mileage and I see hundreds of cars each day. Folks, you need to drive in the right hand lane, PASS in the left lane. Too often people, and myself included as I forget, just set their cruise control and sail down the road in the left lane. That’s not safe. The left lane should be for passing or getting over so you can be safe when passing an emergency vehicle or someone stopped on the shoulder.

2.    Keep A Safe Distance. This is a big one. It is imperative that you keep a safe distance between you and the car in front of you. Leading driving experts, including well as SmartMoterest.com, talk about the 3-second following distance rule. Driving at 65 MPH, your car travels almost 100 feet in one second. You need to keep almost 300 feet distance between you and the car in front of you in order to adhere to the 3-second rule. Your reaction time isn’t what you think it is- especially while driving at 65 (or maybe just a little more…). For more on the topic, please click here.

3.    Use Your Mirrors. How many people do you know that do not use their 2 side or rear view mirrors? These 3 things are the BEST tools you have in your car. A quick glance backwards, and then to the left and right help keep you safe. Always knowing what’s going on around you is key to being a safe driver.

4.    Have a Backup Plan. Your brain can do millions and millions of calculations per second and while you are driving you always need to be thinking one step ahead of the cars in front of you. Being a defensive driver is key. You always need to ask yourself “What if?” What if this guy merging comes over into my lane…where will I go? What if the car in front of me stops quickly, what will I do? Knowing your surroundings and playing a few what if scenarios in your mind as you travel will help keep you safe.

5.    Focus. Nothing should be more important than what you are doing on the road. Your job is to get from point A to point B and do it safely. No phone call, no text message, and no one behind you is more important than your life. You need to focus on your task a hand. Everything else can wait till you are safely at your destination.

So there you have it. My 5 safe driving tips to making sure you arrive safe and sound at your destination. None are very difficult, but each one if followed can make a difference.

TommyLog TECH –  Keeping Safe When Storms Hit #VZWbuzz

I love living in North East Wisconsin where we have 4 beautiful seasons. Along with those awesome seasons comes some not so great extreme weather. Floods, blizzards, severe thunderstorms even an occasional tornado or 2 can be the order of the day. Thanks to my Samsung Galaxy Note 3 from Verizon along with 2 great free apps, severe weather doesn’t catch me by surprise.

Storm Team 5Today I want to share with you 2 mobile apps that can keep you informed and alerted 24 hours a day.

The first one on my list is a simple text only alert mobile app called Simple Weather Alert. This one is for Android only, sorry IOS fans. Simple Weather Alerts is a text only application that allows you to set your favorite locations and get text-based weather alerts based on those locations. You can even set the severity of the notifications as well as override a muted phone. I like that feature… who hasn’t put their phone down while it was silenced and missed an important call? One cool feature not seen in any other app I’ve tested is the ability to email an alert to friends or send via text message, so they can know of the danger as well. Simple Weather Alert is just that, simple, no fills, does what it says, no more, no less.

Now if you want an app that gives you much more information and can be used as your daily weather app, then look no further than the Storm Team 5 weather app for both Android and IOS. This app was created by WFRV5, a local TV station in Green Bay, WI, but works wherever you are. This app builds on many of the features of Simple Weather Alert and adds local radar, hourly forecasts, and 10-day outlook. The Storm Team 5 app lets you save multiple locations as well as a home location. One cool feature hidden in the preferences is the ability to overlay a compass.

Zooming out on the radar gives you a big picture of the inclement weather on the map. The radar even overlays watchs and warnings so you stay safe when trouble’s headed your way headed your way.

You can download Simple Weather Alert from the Google Play Store here https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.globalcanofworms.android.simpleweatheralert&hl=e

Look for the Storm Team 5 app for IOS here https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/storm-team-5/id382465013?mt=8 and the Android app here https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.wfrv.android.weather&hl=en

TommyLog – Good Leaders Make You Feel Safe

A good friend sent me a short article about a life lesson one CEO taught him. One of the points of the article is that a good CEO at work , like the father of a household, needs to make their employees (kids) feel safe.

The money quote from the article…

“What I loved most about working for your dad for all those years was how safe he made us feel. Even when times were tough, you trusted he would see things through. You knew he would do whatever he needed to – and you knew it would work out because he was in charge. It was a good feeling”.

At work, do you make your employees feel safe? At home, do you make your family feel safe? What’s the difference?
