MacWorld Expo Traffic Analysis

Bioanarchism writes “MacWorld Expo has been the receiving end of the brute force of the Internet surfers. Netcraft also reports on the Internet traffic that other Apple websites have gotten since Steve Jobs gave the opening keynote.” The Windows Server 2003-based MacWorld Expo site folded under all those hits, while Apple’s sites, running Mac OS X, were only knocked into sluggishness. (Server load is a complex thing, of course — more complicated than what OS is on the servers.)

Breakthrough In JPEG Compression

Kris_J writes “The makers of the (classic) compression package Stuffit have written a program that can compress JPGs by roughly 30%. This isn’t the raw image to JPG compression, this is lossless compression applied to the JPG file. Typical compression rates for JPGs are 2% to -1%. If you read the whitepaper (PDF), they are even proposing a new image format; StuffIt Image Format (SIF). Now I just need someone to write a SIF compressor for my old Kodak DC260.”

Lorena Bobbitt’s Got Nothing On Her

Since the details from this story in The Sun are not for the squeamish, the juicy tidbits (so to speak) are in the extended entry…

A jilted girl tore off her ex-boyfriend’s testicle with her bare hands – then popped it in her mouth, a court heard yesterday.

Amanda Monti, 24, grabbed Jeffrey Jones, 37, by the genitals in a rage after he refused to have sex.

She ripped off his left testicle leaving him in “excruciating pain”. Monti, just 5ft 2in, then put it in her mouth to hide it.

The testicle was later found by a pal of Mr Jones who handed it back, saying: “That’s yours.” Doctors were unable to re-attach it.

The man’s mate is pretty casual about his find, don’t you think? Also to my single male UK readers; you might want to make note of this ladies picture and name, just in case. You can never be too safe…

Wal-Mart’s Database Now over 460 Terabytes

Walmart

Here’s an interesting number to ponder: “In an article on Wal-Mart’s massive data collection, The New York Times noteed that Wal-Mart has 3,600 stores, 100 million customers weekly, and 460 terabytes of customer data stored on the company mainframes.” And we thought backing up this website was a pain!
