Safety hazard photos

Mark Frauenfelder:
The Navy’s Safety Center website has a fantastic gallery of photos showing people doing foolishly dangerous things.

On the plus side, he is wearing a hard hat. Also, if you look carefully at the boulder’s 4 o’clock, you’ll see a plastic drink bottle propped on another rock, so he is also staying hydrated. And maybe that boulder is actually 20 feet long, so that’s just the tip sticking out. Yeah, that’s it.

Winning Monopoly strategies

monopoly.png

I am HORRIBLE at Monopoly, mostly because I overbuy or get sucked into bidding wars.

Board game expert Erik Arneson has some great tips for winning at Monopoly; admittedly, there’s a lot of luck involved, but if you can get some tried and true strategies under your belt, you can help that luck along a little. Here’s a few that I appreciated:

“Know the odds. Most players make a complete lap around the board in five turns; you’re likely to roll doubles once in those five turns (doubles happen about 17 percent of the time).

Railroads are better to own than utilities, but utilities should be purchased if the opportunity arises (especially if you can get both of them). Short Line is the least useful railroad to own, because it is visited least often.

When you build, get to three houses as quickly as possible. The rent raises significantly between two and three houses. For example, rent on Illinois Avenue jumps from $300 to $750.”

With these tips, I just might get the chance to be a land baron after all.
