What Happens When You Accidentally Buy A $245,000 Car On eBay

Today is the day of odd eBay related lawsuits it seems. The latest is the story of a limo that was once owned by Elvis Presley. The owner tried to sell it on eBay, with a “buy it now” price of $245,000. He was therefore quite happy when someone did, indeed, agree to the “buy it now,” price. There’s just one problem the owner of the account claims his two year old daughter was playing with the mouse on his computer and she is actually the one who made the bid. He apologized, but apparently that wasn’t good enough. The seller is now suing him for $245,000, plus an additional $150,000 in “damages.” There’s a lot that doesn’t make sense on either side of this case. On the buyer’s side, it takes more than just a single click to “buy it now,” so some are saying it must be a hoax bid. The guy stands by his claim, though, that it was just his daughter playing around. On the other side, though, is this really worth that kind of lawsuit? All he has to do is put it up again. He claims he did, but that there were no bidders — which seems odd. There apparently were bidders for the original auction, so it’s not clear where they all went. Either way, it seems a bit vindictive to go sue this guy for that much, even if he did make a hoax bid.

Best paper airplane in the world

Building cool and functional paper airplanes was never my forte but this site makes it easy for anyone to make a great one.  Labelled the “DC3” of paper airplanes the site offers step by step instructions for turning a sheet of ordinary paper into a cool flying machine.  The author even includes a PDF page with all folds indicated so you can print it out and make a paper airplane that flies just like the real thing.  You know, for your kids.

Best Dashboard widgets for web developers

Filed under: It’s certainly no secret that I like Dashboard widgets. Just when I start to think I’m going a little overboard with the widget love, I find a list like this: The Best Of Dashboard Widgets for Web Developers. On her site, Lisa McMillan describes many of the cool widgets that have found a permanent home on her Mac, including:

  • ShortStat, which displays the total number of hits to your site, as well as total unique hits and the 7 most recent referrers (I took a look at ShortStat last month)
  • TypeCast, which allows you to quickly preview fonts and whole font families
  • CSS Cheat Sheet. Now this is cool. CSS Cheat Sheet displays the contents of the very comprehensive CSS Cheat Sheet file over at I Love Jack Daniels, right in your Dashboard.  Cheat sheet indeed!
  • Colourmod A nifty slider to quicky select hex colors.

There are many more. Check them all out. Thanks to Lisa for compiling such a great list.

Download of the Day: Gmail Drive shell extension update

gmaildrive.jpg

The Gmail Drive shell extension – which accesses your Gmail as if it were another hard drive on your computer – has been updated today.

Be sure to uninstall before installing the newest version, which fixes a URL redirection problem with some changes Google released. If you’re not a Shell extension user, check out the original post from 6 months ago on this clever app. Free download, Windows only. Thanks, Lee and Eszter!

MSN Virtual Earth: What Apple Headquarters?

Jim tipped us off to this yesterday and we’re getting a bunch of emails about it today since it was posted on The Register, so we figured we better mention it soon before our inboxes are flooded.

Have a look at 1 Infinite Loop from above. Here we have MSN Virtual Earth on the left and Google Maps on the right.

apple HQ on msn virtual earth vs google maps

I thought maybe Apple fans were just getting a taste of our own medicine, but instead it appears that Microsoft is just behind the times as usual. In Microsoft’s world, for example, the World Trade Center is still standing. Tom Negrino suspects these pics are at least 7 years old. I have a hunch they may be even older.

The app itself has promise though, and it seems smoother than Google Maps in Safari, so I hope they update the imagery soon.
